This work was an artwork which I completed at Visual Arts in school, where we were given a task to explore a social issue through a body of work. I am a rhythmic gymnast and I am very passionate about the gender pay gap in sport. Personally, I have experienced and seen the consequences that come with being a woman in sport. The lack of representation of female sport and female athletes, as well as the type of representation (sexualised, not taken seriously) being portrayed in the media is extremely upsetting. The lack of funding for female sports is also a large issue in creating a gap between male and female sport. I believe that respecting women as serious athletes, and their sport as a serious competition, is extremely important in the funding and closing the pay gap of women’s sport. I created this work to express my passion for this issue, and to demonstrate the large gaps which are present in the road to gender equity.
