UN Hears Australian Youth

By · 08 October, 2013 · News, Youth Representative

Australian youth had their concerns heard by the United Nations overnight.

Adam Pulford, the Australian Youth Representative to the UN, spoke in New York on Monday at the UN General Assembly on behalf of Australian young people.

Mr Pulford raised ending discrimination and achieving equality for all as the priority of young Australians. Before landing in New York, Mr Pulford, 23, spent five months travelling to each state and territory to listen to young people from throughout Australia.

‘Across our country, the common message coming from young Australians is they are deeply concerned about the continued existence of discrimination’ Mr Pulford said.

‘Young Australians want to see a world where discrimination in all its forms is ended: a world where equality reigns.’

Addressing the UN Member States, Mr Pulford noted that ending discrimination in societies and structures is often put aside. Mr Pulford encouraged the Member States not to lose focus on creating a world free from discrimination in their work over the coming weeks.

‘Through our work, let us allow all of our citizens to reach their full potential, free from discrimination, for the benefit of us all’ Mr Pulford said.

Mr Pulford will be working with the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York for the next five weeks. During this time he will continue to represent the opinions and visions of young Australians at the UN.

The Youth Representative position is presented by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and youth-led charity UN Youth Australia.

Arisha Arif, 21, UN Youth Australia’s Director of Youth Representation, says Australia is one of only a small percentage of countries that has a Youth Representative.

‘The Youth Representative position provides an incredible opportunity for young Australians’ priorities to be heard in this important international forum’ Ms Arif said.

Applications to be the 2014 Youth Representative close at midnight tonight, October 8, and can be made at www.youthrep.org.au.
