Justice is Coming: The 2015 Victoria State Conference by Chloe Fabbro

It’s that time of year again. The 2015 Victorian State Conference is ready to roll!

With over 100 registrations and still two weeks left to go, it’s a guarantee that this year’s conference theme “Justice: The Big Picture” will be bigger and better than ever.

We are at a new venue this year to accommodate for our growth which means we have so much more room for activities! Our content has been crafted carefully to thoroughly explore as many aspects of justice as possible – enforcing justice through courts, human rights and looking broadly at what justice exactly is.

After 9+ hour shifts at work, completely exhausted, I still get a rush as I settle down with my trusty Mac to update the registration list, prepare delegate packs and lose myself in the general hullabaloo of conference planning – oh the joys of being a convenor!

If you haven’t already registered – let me tell you why you should. Not only will you meet amazing, bright, like-minded people also deeply passionate about global issues – you will meet people that you just instantly click with. You’re the only person that knows some misc. indie band? I guarantee there will be one other person at conference that knows the lyrics to their every song backwards. State Conference is so much more than just being able to debate in the glorious Mock UN fashion. Its about connecting with other people who share your interests, celebrity crushes and even misc bands. UN Youth is truly a place where you will make friends for life and – much to our awesome team of facilitators demise – probably stay up until 2am in your cabins bonding over a mutual love for chai tea.

I know conferences can be daunting at the start; so many new faces, new fancy terms like “sovereignty” or “gross domestic product”  – I promise you will be well accustomed to these terms by the end – but the best advice I can give you is to dive in the deep end head first. Introduce yourselves to people, chat with them, ask them their opinions on the workshop you just had – there is just so much to do and there is NEVER a dull moment. Just remember, everyone else is in the same boat as you!

On the educational side, there is also so much to be learnt. I promise, its not a school classroom lecture-style thingy. This is engaging, powerful stuff designed to make you think and speak for yourself, and just as importantly, listen to others and their views in order to form your own perspective on things and open your eyes to ways you haven’t considered before. We have an amazing set of workshops lined up for you, as well as guest speakers and an amazing set of resolutions for debating MUN style.

Basically, this is not an opportunity that you will want to miss. Going to my first conference as a delegate in Year 10 was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have ever made – and that was 4 years ago and I am still involved with the organisation. We really hope to see you there!

Best wishes and many smiles,

State Conference Convenor 2015
