The Right to Refuge
What is the difference between refugees and asylum seekers? What is Australia’s policy on refugees and asylum seekers? How are refugees and asylum seekers portrayed in the media and how does this shape our perceptions towards them? What obstacles do refugees face when resettling in Australian communities?
Refugees and asylum seekers provoke important human rights issues, but these issues are largely misunderstood in Australia. Many people do not understand the difference between a refugee and asylum seeker, let alone the differences in Australia’s policy between the two. Yet, refugees and asylum seekers are constantly the topic of political debate, and media saturation. Come join us at JLW 2018, so that you can better understand the debates going on around you about refugees and asylum seekers and actively participate in contributing your own informed beliefs and ideas.
Junior Leadership Weekend is a 2 day, 1 night residential conference. Delegates will participate in thematic workshops based around refugees and asylum seekers, and will enhance their communication, advocacy and leadership skills through structured skills workshops. Assisting the development of these skills will be influential and inspiring guest speakers, who will share their wisdom on the key to successful campaigning and social change. By the end of the weekend, delegates will have an insightful understanding of some of the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in Australia and will be more confident in their ability to create social change in their local communities, and eventually the world. They will also have a whole lot of fun with activities such as trivia and a disco, and make lots of new friends.
