Queensland Evatt Competition

Evatt Queensland is the state’s round of the Evatt Trophy – Australia’s largest, oldest, and most prestigious debating and diplomacy competition, with over 2000 students competing from every State and Territory.

Participation in this competition places Queensland students from Years 9 -12 in the shoes of UN Security Council representatives. This is an opportunity for students to garner a deeper understanding of global issues, and train themselves in the skills they need for active citizenship.

Success in the Queensland round can lead to a spot on the Queensland delegation to the Evatt National Finals.

Above all else, Evatt is designed for students with varying interests, experiences, and abilities. No previous knowledge of international affairs, or MUN debating, is necessary.

Registrations for the competition are currently open!

How Evatt Works in Queensland

The Evatt Competition has three rounds in Queensland – preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and a Queensland Grand Final.

The Preliminary Rounds are held in many regions around Queensland: the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Lismore and in Brisbane.

From these regional rounds, thirty teams will be selected to attend the Semi-Finals in Brisbane. The top 15 teams from the semi-finals go on to compete in the Queensland Grand Final. The top 4 of those teams represent their school and their state at the National Finals in December – which is held in a different capital city each year.

More information and tips about how to prepare can be found on the National Evatt page.

The best way to become familiar with the Evatt rules of procedure is to give it a go! Many beginners attend each year, and first-timers usually get the hang of ‘MUN’ by the second round of debate.

Contact the Evatt Convenor Steph Archer at qldevatt@unyouth.org.au for more information or if you missed out on the registration period.

We look forward to seeing you compete!

Can more than one team from a school compete in the Preliminary Rounds?

Yes – UN Youth QLD encourages schools to send as many teams as possible.

Do teammates have to be in the same grade at school?

No – students do not have to be in the same grade as their teammate. We also don’t require both teammates to attend the same school, however, it is preferred.

How long is each round?

Rounds are approximately three hours long, with two resolutions debated. There will be a break between the first and the second resolution.

When do teams receive their country allocation and resolution?

Teams will receive their country allocation and the prepared resolution via email at least one week before their preliminary round. Teams that register less than one week before their preliminary round will receive their country allocation and resolution as soon as possible after registration.

When will the results be announced?

Results will not be announced at the conclusion of any Preliminary Round. The teams that have progressed to the second round will be announced via email after the last Preliminary Round.

What is the dress code for the Evatt Competition?

Students are to wear school uniform for all rounds of the Evatt Competition.
